Baysanan sa Rosario (Traditional Batangas Wedding)

9/22/2023

Compilation of videos courtesy of daddy wel tv. We chose these videos filmed in Barangay Bulihan, Rosario, Batangas for this post. Visit daddy wel's Youtube channel for more handaan/celebration videos and whatnot. The series covers things we see in a traditional Batangas wedding or baysanan from lipatan, panunulungan, sumanan, wedding reception, pasabit, and sabugan. Slaughtering of animals, also part of the preparation, is not included in the videos as it will violate YouTube guidelines.

Also worth noting in a Batangas wedding is pulungan, the Batangueño term for pamamanhikan. Other terms/practices preceeding the wedding proper are paghahanda, martesan, paglalawo, pagdadahon, pagniniyog, and pahapunan.

Another tradition right after the wedding is the dapit.
Sticky rice cakes such as suman and kalamay symbolize strong attachment of the couple to each other and to each other's familly.
What's fascinating about lipatan is that manunulungan (people who do the preparation like cooking and slaughtering), relatives, and friends of the groom (collectively called mamamaysan) would go to the bride's residence (the usual venue of the wedding reception) and with them they would bring the cookwares, utensils, ingredients, and animals to be slaughtered. The wedding dress too is usually provided by the groom's party. The bride's party, on the other hand, is called babaysanin. Both parties help hand-in-hand with the preparation which is such a sight.
The suman in the second video is primarily given to everyone who give sabog or cash gifts during the sabugan. For the principal sponsors, suman is given along with a basket of goodies and primal cuts of meat collectively called panabit.

Baysanan also in SItio Burandal, but a different pair of couple.
Suman in talakid, anti-bisperas, in Barangay Sta. Cruz and full lipatan to the bride's residence in Barangay Colongan. It also includes the wedding ceremony at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish Church.
