As one of the first major events in a chaotic year, the eruption displaced thousands of families, disrupted livelihoods, and forced Batangueños into the unfamiliar experience of wearing masks and adhering to lockdowns—months before the world would face similar restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
