Five years ago, on January 12, 2020, Taal Volcano roared back to life with a violent eruption, casting a cloud of ash and fear across Batangas and beyond. A volcanic island in Taal Lake, Taal Volcano is known as one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes, and its 2020 eruption was a stark reminder of its power. As one of the first major events in a chaotic year, the eruption displaced thousands of families, disrupted livelihoods, and forced Batangueños into the unfamiliar experience of wearing masks and adhering to lockdowns—months before the world would face similar restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
